Nova Scotia Provincial Resolutions Press Release - 62nd Annual Provincial Convention - Yarmouth Convention renews CWL Women to work for Peace and Hope Kentville, Nova Scotia – June 5, 2010: The 62nd Provincial Convention of the Catholic Women’s League of Canada was held in Yarmouth from June 4 to 6. St. Ambrose Council of the Catholic Women’s League of Canada hosted the event which brought together over 140 women from across Nova Scotia. The event began with a Pre-convention Executive Meeting on Friday evening. On Saturday, a celebration of Liturgy with Eucharist was held at St. Ambrose Cathedral with Provincial Spiritual Advisor Father Douglas Murphy as celebrant. Over $400 was raised for Tabitha Centre which helps the needy in the Yarmouth area. Official opening ceremonies followed at the Rodd Inn and Conference Centre. Danielle McNeil Hessian, National President of the Catholic Women’s League who hails from Bedford Nova Scotia was the theme development speaker. Throughout the past two years, League members have been encouraged to aspire to be Women of Peace and Hope bringing God’s light to others. Ms. McNeil Hessian’s address to the membership gave witness to her experiences as she journeyed throughout Canada while living out her faith. In faith, fun and fulfillment, delegates were encouraged to grow the League and to be shining examples of peace and hope for others. Throughout the weekend, the League’s Standing Committee reports were presented by each Chairperson. Each report reflected the charity and work of League members at the parish level. Delegates also celebrated faith through reflective Spiritual Programs held on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday evening, two members were recognized with Life Membership in National Council. Joan Bona of the Antigonish Diocese and Mary MacDonald of Halifax Diocese were recipients of this National Award. Both members have fulfilled the criteria for Life Membership. Outgoing Provincial President Janice Peddle was recognized for her leadership and dedication in assuming the position with the untimely death of former President Marian Hepditch Littlepage. As part of the Atlantic School of Theology’s Convocation Ceremonies, the Provincial Council has established an annual bursary in memory of Marian Hepditch Littlepage. This year’s recipient is Maryn Anderson, a graduate of AST. Members throughout Nova Scotia also embarked on a “Buy a Net Program”. During 2009, approximately 20 villages were supported through the program to prevent the spread of malaria and to distribute bed nets and medication in Uganda. On Sunday morning, the election of officers was held. Those installed as members of the Provincial Executive for 2010-2012 are: President – Mary MacDonald (Halifax Diocese), President Elect/Organization – Debbie Samson (Antigonish Diocese), Past President – Janice Peddle (Yarmouth Diocese), 1st Vice President/Community Life – Joan Bona (Antigonish Diocese), 2nd Vice President/Education and Health – Ann Bradbury (Halifax Diocese), Treasurer – Theresa Duann (Halifax Diocese), Communications – Connie Lai Fatt (Halifax Diocese), Secretary – Ann McGray (Halifax Diocese), Christian Family Life – Carol Pottie (Halifax Diocese), Legislation – Anna Hawkins (Yarmouth Diocese), Resolutions – Mary Sweeney (Yarmouth Diocese), Spiritual Development - Mary MacLeod (Halifax Diocese). Father Doug Murphy of the Antigonish Diocese will continue to serve as Spiritual Advisor. The Provincial Executive has appointed Marilyn MacDonald of the Antigonish Diocese as Life Member Liaison. The Provincial Executive also includes representation from each Diocesan council. The current Diocesan Presidents are Toosje Van de Sande of Antigonish, Shirley Campbell of Halifax and Ann Myers of Yarmouth. The Provincial Convention for 2011 will be held in Antigonish and hosted by St. Ninian’s Council in June. The Catholic Women’s League of Canada is a national organization rooted in gospel values calling its members to holiness through service to the people of God. Throughout Nova Scotia, there are approximately 5100 members who support 85 parishes and represent the Dioceses of Antigonish, Halifax and Yarmouth.
